Polymer – Culture factory of fantastic Utopias
Simon B. Häfele

The post-industrial charm exhaled by that old brick-layered factory building situated in the heart of Tallinns’ district Kristiine caught me on the 16th of September 2006, when I entered Polymer1 for the first time in order to attend a Performance Art workshop. Old metal tubes of all sizes stuck out from the walls and ceilings, …

It would be great if the lines could be printed in a Art Magazine like “Estonian Art” or maybe in “Kunst.ee”. Please contact me in case of interesst. See “Contact details.”

First Field Research in Estonia Ended

Simon B. Haefele is back to Vienna, now working on the material collected in his recent two month long field trip through Estonia. As a basis for his travels he stayed as Artist-In-Residence at the Polymer Culture Factory. Form 27 July until 1 October, 2009 he interviewed more then thirty artists, curators, art historians, journalists, collectors, gallerists, bibliographers, diplomats, academics and directors of museums. His research compares artistic strategies on the Estonian-Russian border to those in Israel and Palestine and those on the US-Mexico border. By the end of 2009 the first results and parts of interviews in Estonia will be published on this web-page.

Other public activities in Estonia during this stay: Simon installed a mobile Closed-Circuit-Installation called “Your-Self-Research Station” which recorded the audience answering the question “How Do You Use Art?” at his Public-Art-Research Booth, Performance-Art-Festival Seanahk (31 July, 2009) . During the Polymer Festival (27 August, 2009) as part of “Global Container”, he invited participants in Estonian, Russian and English, to his “Open Brunch and Discussion Series” where he publically asked the crucial question “What Is the Power of the Artist?”. As a member and founder of sonance.artistic.network he presented the re.sonance.007.dvd “Manic.Fiction” at the Plektrum VJ Festival (27 September, 2009)

Where: Art Container at the Polymer Culture Factory
Madara 22, Kristiine – Tallinn, Estonia.
Who: Simon B. Haefele kindly supported by Art Container.

See below for Estonian an Russian text.

As a follow up to the “Art Brunch series for Estonia” by Simon B. Haefele the Austrian artist invited to a late brunch. He asked people to think on the following questions and bring their thoughts to the get-together.

What to you think is the power of the artist?
What effects, what impact and what kind of influence on society can one single person have?
How is art being used by the various protagonists in the field and by yourself?
What could or should be brought to people by the use of artistic methods?

We called for people working within the “operating system of art” – Artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, academics, journalists, art therapists, organizers, museum directors, publishers, founding organizations, politicians and ambassadors, businessman and art audience – to come together, challenge the different viewpoints, and share thoughts and opinions about the prospects of the arts.

The discussion was held in English got recorded. The “Power of Art – Open Brunch and Discussion” is part of research on “The Use of Art on Disputed Boundaries” and part of the annual Polymer Culture Factory Festival.

During the presentation night in Haapsalu it happened that Your-Self-Research Station was still recoding late at night. Besides a lot of other material of people answering the question “How do you use art?” and having fun with the station the exiled Georgian poet Zurab Rtveliashvili and me had the chance to talk to a young Estonian soldier. The video is showing the 26 year old soldier reporting his controversial experiences with war, life and love.

The Short Poetic Ontology
Bijouterie:

For inner hen,
For inner pig,
For inner predator.

Act 1

The inner hen appears.
The inner pig appears.
The inner predator appears.

It appears the inner hen is astonished.
It appears the inner pig is angry.
It appears the inner predator got furious.

The inner hen is simple.
The inner pig is massive.
The inner predator is dangerous.

The inner hen stays secretly,
The inner pig stays secretly,
The inner predator stays secretly.

Is it a woman (?) the inner hen,
Is it a woman (?) the inner pig,
Is it a woman (?) the inner predator.

Is it a man (?) the inner predator,
Is it a man (?) the inner pig,
Is it a man (?) the inner hen.

The hen fearing the Lord during the fast (!)
The pig fearing the Lord during the fast (!)
The predator fearing the Lord during the fast (!)

The inner hen – hates,
The inner pig – is jealous,
The inner predator – is anxious.

Final act

The inner hen is knocking with its beak!
The inner pig is digging with its snout!
The inner predator is dangerous (!!!)

The inner hen will be slaughtered,
The inner pig will be slaughtered,
The inner predator will be killed…

Installation: Your-Self-Research by Simon B. Haefele 2009

Installation: “Your-Self-Research”
Starting point of research on “The Effect of Art on Disputed Boundaries” in Estonia.

Presented on the Festival “Seahank” (Pigskin) in Haapsalu, Estonia.
Materials: 1 DV-Camera, 1 Flat-Screen, DV-Tapes; Copyright 2009 Simon Häfele

The installation “Your-Self-Research” was an integral part of the International Performance Art Festival “Seanahk” of the curators and Toomik Jaan Eerik Alalooga in Haapsalu, Estonia. On 31st of July 2009 Simon B. Häfele installed the “closed-circuit-installation” at the entrance of a former cabarets from the Soviet era, the major venue of the festival. The interactive work provided the opportunity to ask and answer the basic question “HOW DO YOU USE ART?”. The artist invited the visitors (approx. 350) to place themselves in front of the running camera and thus in the monitor to effect an inner dialogue. Questions and answers were recorded during the entire presentation.
